Your "MUST HAVES" for a Vermont Wedding Venue: 10 Essential Considerations from a Wedding Photographer

Choosing a Vermont Wedding Venue:

Planning your dream wedding in Vermont? The venue sets the stage for your special day, and choosing the right one involves thoughtful consideration. Here are five key things to look for when picking your Vermont wedding venue:

1. Scenic Beauty and Ambiance:

Vermont is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and there is no shortage in diversity! Look for a venue that captures the natural beauty of the region that resonates with you. Whether it's nestled in the Green Mountains, on top of a ski mountain, overlooking a beautiful lake, off in the woods or in a field of wildflowers, choose a venue that resonates with your vision and your love story! It's cliche, but "location, location, location!" Your venue is the backdrop to your wedding day, it is the basis for the vibe and tone, the ground on which you will say "I do."

2. Lighting in Interior Spaces:

Don't underestimate the impact of lighting on the ambiance of your wedding venue, especially in interior spaces. Consider the interplay of light with various elements such as wood, white paint, and tents. Wood can impart a warm, rustic glow, while white paint reflects light for a brighter, airy feel. If your venue includes tents, explore how lighting can be elegantly incorporated to create a magical atmosphere. Additionally, take note of the presence and placement of windows. Natural light streaming through windows can add a soft and enchanting touch to your celebration, creating beautiful photo opportunities and enhancing the overall atmosphere. Pay attention to the venue's existing lighting features and how they align with your vision for a captivating and well-lit wedding celebration.

3. Seasonal Considerations:

Vermont experiences distinct seasons, each offering its own charm. Consider the time of year you plan to tie the knot and how the venue accommodates the season. A venue with outdoor spaces might be perfect for a summer wedding, while a cozy indoor setting could be ideal for a winter celebration. Many venues have beautiful gardens and florals, ask about what will be in bloom on your date to get an idea of the color palette of the landscaping and use it to your advantage.

4. Accommodations for Guests:

Ease of access and accommodations for your guests are crucial. Vermont is MOSTLY a rural place. If you are hosting a destination wedding it is preferable for your venue to be central to some interesting or scenic Vermont attractions to keep your guests entertained in their free time. Check if the venue offers lodging options or has partnerships with nearby hotels. Consider the convenience for out-of-town guests and whether the venue provides ample parking, will you want to be hiring shuttles? Ensuring your loved ones have a comfortable experience will enhance the overall joy of your celebration.

5. "Getting Ready" Space:

It's likely that your photographer will be arriving while your hair and makeup artist is wrapping up, capturing moments with family and friends as you get ready can result in treasured memories and images. So that begs the question, where will you be getting ready? On-site or in a nearby hotel? Natural light and a tidy and beautiful space are the most ideal locations for getting ready. Windows and room to move around are preferred. Ask your wedding party to help you get personal belongings and clutter to another room to create a calm atmosphere.

6. Capacity and Flexibility:

Evaluate the venue's capacity to ensure it accommodates your guest list comfortably. Additionally, consider the flexibility of the space. Does it offer various areas for different parts of the celebration, such as a separate space for the ceremony and reception? Having versatile options allows you to customize the event to your preferences.

7. Would you LOVE Your "Rain Plan":

In Vermont, where weather can be unpredictable, having a solid "rain plan" is crucial. If there is anything I have learned from years in Vermont, especially summer 2023 is you need to be ready for rain. I say this all the time now "do you LOVE your rain plan?!" You should. Check if the venue provides indoor alternatives or covered spaces in case of unexpected rain. Knowing there's a well-thought-out backup plan will give you peace of mind and ensure a seamless transition in case the weather decides to surprise you.

8. Shade on the Property:

For outdoor ceremonies and receptions, consider the availability of shade on the venue's property. Vermont summers can be sunny, and having shaded areas can provide comfort for your guests. Not only that, the best group photos are in the shade, no squinting, no sunglasses! Whether it's natural tree cover or strategically placed structures, ensuring there are shaded spaces adds to the overall comfort of your celebration.

9. Religious and Cultural Traditions:

Depending on the traditions or religious elements that you want to incorporate into your wedding day you may want to consider the proximity to any chapel or church. Some venues have their accommodations, reception space and chapels all on site!

10. Services and Amenities:

Explore the services and amenities offered by the venue. Some venues provide in-house catering, while others may allow you to bring in your preferred vendors. Consider whether the venue offers event coordination services to ease the planning process. Knowing what is included and available will help streamline your wedding preparations.

11. Consider the Unique Character Historical Venues:

Choosing a historical wedding venue in Vermont adds a touch of timeless elegance and a rich tapestry of stories to your special day. Vermont boasts an array of enchanting historical venues, each with its own unique charm. From centuries-old mansions to charming barns with a storied past, these venues offer more than just a beautiful setting—they provide a backdrop steeped in history and culture. Consider the romance of exchanging vows in a space that has witnessed generations of love stories unfold. Historical venues often feature architectural details, lush gardens, and antique elements that transport you and your guests to a bygone era. The blend of history and celebration creates a truly memorable experience, making historical wedding venues in Vermont an inspired choice for couples seeking a wedding infused with character and enduring beauty.

Remember, your wedding venue sets the tone for the entire celebration. By considering these eleven factors, you'll be well on your way to finding the perfect Vermont venue that aligns with your vision for your special day.
